In post-independence India, the country’s craftsmanship faced a turning point. As the nation focused on industrialization, traditional artisans found themselves at a crossroads—either continue age-old techniques or adapt to modern demands. It was during this time, in the 1950s, that the Indian leather industry began to transform, with small family-run workshops evolving into larger-scale operations, integrating modern techniques while preserving their traditional craftsmanship.
The story of Legacy Leathers begins here, inspired by one such workshop founded by our grandfather in the vibrant city of Kanpur, often called the “Leather City of the World.” During the early decades of India’s independence, Kanpur emerged as a global player in the leather industry, with its artisans blending traditional handcrafting techniques with new technology to meet growing international demand.
In 2024, we decided to revive this family tradition, but with a twist: modern designs, ethical practices, and a focus on sustainability. Our leather is sourced responsibly, ensuring minimal environmental impact, and each piece is crafted with a blend of the old and the new—combining hand-finishing techniques passed down through generations with modern design elements that suit today’s fashion-conscious individual.
Every product we create tells the story of India’s evolving leather industry, paying homage to the workshops of the past while looking toward the future. At Legacy Leathers, we believe in slow fashion, where quality, durability, and craftsmanship come together to create timeless accessories. Our artisans, many of whom are descendants of the original leather workers from Kanpur, embody the spirit of innovation and tradition in every stitch.
